The butterfly release program at Garretson farm is in its fifth year. Garretson has butterfly-friendly gardens that provide food and host plants for Monarchs and other butterflies.
The Gardens

The gardens at the Garretson are a source of pride for the volunteers.    Originally a homestead farm, subsistence and market crops were grown from the early 1700’s through the early 1970’s by the Garretson family.     Upon acquisition by the GFFR and Bergen County, the grounds directly behind the homestead continued to be cultivated by the volunteers in individual plots for their private consumption. In 1989, a new vision emerged for the Garretson land. Little by little, the plots were given over to the growing of specimen and heirloom crops and an herb garden was designed and installed.      In the mid 1990’s, the herb garden was expanded to include over 50 varieties of medicinal and culinary herbs and a pantry garden was added and continues to give sustenance to two local food pantries.    In addition, ongoing efforts are being made to establish butterfly gardens, fruit orchards and the cultivation of native plants and flowers.     The Master Gardeners of Bergen County have been instrumental in the ongoing planning and care of the gardens.
